The Difference Between Tempered Glass and Laminated Glass
There are significant differences between tempered and laminated glass that are worth knowing. In fact people tend to confuse them because of some common characteristics between the two but the reality is that they are totally different. So if you are thinking of renovating a residential or commercial space, learn about the use and applications of one type and the other.
We will start from scratch, that is, from the manufacture of both. If you do not know yet we tell you that tempered glass comes after a thermal process of a monolithic glass sheet heated to 650 degrees to immediately go through a process of air cooling making it a resistant material.
Laminated glass, on the other hand, is the result of the union of two sheets of monolithic glass but also tempered with a layer of PVB, resin or others that are definitely decisive to turn it into a penetration resistant glass.
In addition, the glass to be tempered already has the color and measurements, but the laminated glass can change the tone or size once it is created. You must take into account this important fact.
Characteristics of tempered glass
- Suitable for installations with hardware
- Does not absorb much solar energy
- 4 to 5 times stronger than ordinary glass
- When broken, shards are small and rounded
- Color and measurements are established before tempering
Characteristics of laminated glass
- Not well suited for hardware installations
- Absorbs 99.5% of solar energy
- Highly resistant to penetration and impact
- When broken the glass remains attached to the interlayer
- Can take on different colors
Uses of tempered glass
- Cell phone screens
- Shower doors with hardware
- Handrails
- Partitions in interior sections
Laminated glass uses
- Windshields
- Building facades
- Armored cars
- Floor-steps
- Shower doors without hardware
